From the looks of it you're looking for a gripping war drama that has mecha. Most of the time this isn't until the end arcs. If you think this is cheesy or whatever you haven't seen Macross 7 obviously. Also, if you stick with Macross F don't be surprised when singing is the strongest weapon against the aliens, no joke it's a central macross theme. Personally, I think you'd be happier just watching macross plus, particularly the movie version over the OVA.
