It’s been a very busy month. While most of us are facing dreadful exams, this blog is left to rot. Well, it’s not like it never happened before to this blog, lol.

Oh wazzup people? Let’s get this blog on the roll again. Starting with a question: “What show would you recommend to those who never watched an anime?”.

Newbies as in: Never heard of anim. Heard of anime but never bother to watch one. Anything. Just as long they’re never watched any anime. What would you recommend them?

Before this, I had always recommend *gasp* Naruto and Bleach. Instantly, they were hooked on to it and kept on bugging me for new episodes (yes, I used to watch those shows). Believe me, these people originally labeled me as “kids” because I watch ” Japanese cartoons”. Well, who’s the “kid” now?

Why they’re instantly hooked on to Naruto and Bleach? I dunno. Maybe it’s because of it’s cheesy action and adventure (no offense to Naruto and Bleach fan, but yeah, I don’t like these two anime).

Hence nowadays, I recommended this:

Edo

Never fuck around with Bonta-kun. He'll beat the shit out of you.

Fullmetal Panic: Fumoffu. This is considered to be the nuclear bomb of anime, very destructive and never fails on anyone… so far. I’ve been recommending this to those who never watched a single anime before and it works. Feed them one episode and they’ll demand for more.

HolyCow

MURRRDEERRRRRR!!! IT'S FUCKIN' MURRDDEERRRRRR

If you have friends who enjoy some dark humor, you can never go wrong with Detroit Metal City. Next to Fumoffu, I personally think this is then second most funniest anime out there, plus at only ~13 minutes per episode it’s not hard to show it to someone between classes, during lunch etc. The fact that you can just pick up any episode and still understand it is a definite bonus IMO

Silencers

For people new to anime, I always try to look for some good shonen for them to chew on. By good shonen, I mean shows that have a good balance of action, comedy and does not repeat what I call ‘The Dragon Ball Formula‘ i.e. talented boy fights a villain slightly stronger, gets beaten, goes home to train/learn a new skill, then comes back and wins with new skills. Then newer, stronger villain comes around, rinse and repeat.

Shonen is srsbsns, yo.

There are actually quite a few good shonen out there, the most popular one, and perhaps fail-proof title being Fullmetal Alchemist. The first adaptation back in 2003 was an excellent run, and the new series which begun in April last year took it higher. FMA is famous for it fantastic balance of comedy, action and drama, but more importantly, it ranks high for its compelling story and superb character development. If I had to choose between the two, the new Brotherhood series is the way to go since it follows the manga very closely(whereas the first TV airing caught up with the manga and diverts into its own plot).

You have something better in mind? Discuss in the comment section below :)

PS: Sorry that we’ve been away for a very long time. Exam is like a cancer. One author affected by would effect the other authors. T_T

    Dokuro-chan which I tell them nothing about and when they see what happens they just say “Awesome…”

  2. Elfen Lied. If they don’t change their minds after watching that, then nothing will.

    Follow it up by Death Note, then perhaps a nice dosage of Ghost in The Shell.

    Just NEVER, EVER show a non-anime fan a shounen anime the first time. Unless they’re teen boys :p

  3. I was talking about TTGL with one of my sorta kind likes anime friends and a non-anime watching friend over heard and thought it sounded it awesome. He watched the whole thing and loved it. Though TTGL I think would be very hit and miss with most people.

  4. Good question :D I’d recommend Fullmetal Alchemist for newbs; it’s quality stuff and it doesn’t have any excessive fanservice that will ward off new people. I think that it delves a bit deeper than standard shonen, as well; plenty of drama along side the action, not to mention it’s got a great balance of comedy.

  5. @dood
    I’ll try that with my next batch of specimens.

    @deculture!
    Sadly, that’s what i did :(. Now they become huge Naruto and Bleach fans instead of anime fan. :(

    @crazydave
    We’ll surely try that.

    @Mint
    Good suggestion but I was hoping something that spans within 1-2 season lol. It will be hard for me to “supply” them animus every each episode that comes out. That what happened when I suggested that Naruto and Bleach. God, regretted that. >_<

  6. Ouran High School Hostclub. LIKE DUH.

    I’ll comment more when I come around to think of it. Meanwhile, it’s back to Land Law II for me.

    Speaking of which, LAND LAW IS FUCKKIIIIINNGGGG ORGASMIC.

    fapfapfapfapfap

    Yeah, that’s another good one. Short and pretty fucked up. Fucked up shows are good. Good luck in your exams.

    Antique Bakery and Kyo Kara Maoh!?

  9. What? Not Doraemon? HERESY!

  10. Usually, it’s what kind of audience I want them to get attracted to.

    Yuppies (like me): Hataraki Man, Working!!
    IPTA(K)/Maktab Rendah/Polyteknik: Light shows that are currently showing (e.g. K-On!! or Hidamari Sketch), then introduce them to other darker shows.
    Adults: Give them gore (Shigurui).
    Horny adults: Just give them Menculik Miyabi, sudah.

  11. @ode
    That, I’m pretty sure will attract girls more than guys. Still a good suggestion :)

    @Iluna
    Oh, I was waiting for someone to actually mention that. Doraemon is a good classic but it caused the problem that i mentioned “they think anime are for kids” because a lot of kids here watched Doraemon. :(

    @TP
    I LOLed at IPTA/Maktab Rendah/Polyteknik. XD

    Well, since my MUM had the same opinion (of me XD), I introduced Hayao Miyazaki films to her. (To my shame, she has watched more of them than me). I think the first was Spirited Away.

    I think you have to be careful in introducing anime like Elfen Lied to first timers though, they might get the wrong impression that anime is disturbing ^^’ Although it’ll definitely bring home the point not all anime are for kids.

    I second FMA: Brotherhood. Can’t do much wrong if it sticks to the awesome plot of the manga. Great plot +character development + action + hints of love if you know where to look + humor + suitably dark in places = epic IMO.

    By the way, I totally understand about exams, mine starts tomorrow T.T (and I’m here lol)

  13. @whippersnapper
    Oh yes, how can i forget those. Throw them ‘Grave of the Fireflies’ and see them cry. Also throw them Princess Mononoke for some serious gore fest. >:3

    Good luck on your exams.

  14. faz

    if i were to recommend any anime to newbies…sukuran definitely the first anime that i’ll mention.

  15. sue

    how bout school days… such a nice story…. give a good moral too…. lol.. ;)

  16. Necrolord

    My Anime virginity was taken by Mononokehime, but what really left me craving for more was Trigun. I just really liked and still like Knives and Legato, as well as Wolfwood.

  17. Nid

    The efficient way is to give them Naruto or bleach but…… they will become Naruto and bleach fans instead of anime fans.

    about school days………………………. I only think that they will have nightmares…….. (you know what happen)

  18. Delilah

    It depends for boys and girls it’s very different. A universal anime is Death Note I got many people hooked on anime from that one. But for boys I’d say Gantz I’ve got many of them hooked on that especially if they’re into a lot of gore and action. Girls I tell them to try Ouran, Fruits Basket, Gravitation, Kaleido Star or Peach Girl. Something girly but still enticing. I also recommend old schooler Golden Boy, It’s full of pure epicness! and at only 6 episodes how could you go wrong?
