Episode 11

I wasn’t particularly happy about Nyan Koi direction. I was more focusing on love triangle between Kanako, Junpei and Mizuno. The problem is, the pattern is the same over and over again, especially the interaction between Kanako and Junpei. I was wondering why near the end they decided to give another episode show development for Kanako, and it was kinda pointless and draggy for me.

The only worth thing was Junpei suddenly pop out cat ears, mainly because Keade overheard him talking to cats. Then again, she only THOUGHT that he can speak with cats, then she dismissed the whole thought, so why did the curse happen so quickly ?

Episode 12

So in the anime, we finally get to see Junpei becoming a cat, thanks to the previous incident in last episode. Despite that, there was particularly nothing interesting or funny about that. As I mention earlier, the jokes are becoming less funny and they rely on generic comedy which I’ve seen over and over again.

Though the part where Junpei transform back to a human naked was amusing though, heh. Other than that however, this episode wasn’t entertaining at all.

So they decided to leave the ending open for a second season, ending it with a New Year chapter from the manga. I guess this is understandable since the manga is on-going, and I think its better this way than to add unnecessary fillers.

Final Thoughts

In the beginning, although not spectacular, Nyan Koi started out very decent. However as the episode progress, it become more generic like the typical love comedy, ignoring and abandoning the cat jokes. Sometimes it tries to implement the cat jokes, but it seems out of place or not connecting very well. Overall, I was rate this series as average. You can give it a try, but expect it to lose steam as the series nears the end. It’s not a particularly bad idea to watch it since its short.

On the side note, this is a pretty interesting way to recharge your energy, lol. Oh well, seems like next week is Kanako centric, and I’m thinking they might make some drama near the end of that episode, then wrap it up for episode 12. The ending could be that Junpei doesn’t confess to anyone, but basically his normal routine. I do hope they are preparing some surprises for us.

Ehh !? Swimsuit episode !?

Yeah ! Swimsuit episode ! BANZAI !

Ah…swimsuit episodes. Who doesn’t love’em ? It’s pretty normal in a love comedy anime, so the format it’s pretty much the standard type. Lots of boobs bouncing and lovely girls in bikini swimsuits. I think they animated this arc very faithfully to the manga, except for adding the twins in it. Surprisingly, only the first half is a swimsuit episode.

Nagi never fails to crack me up. Too bad she got less airtime recently.

I got to admit, this cat has surely got a feminine feel in her. Maybe its a the looks or the voice, I’m not sure. Now, a cat is still not fine for me too.

SNOW ? Around this time ? AT A POOL ?

Okay, my guesses were right. Junpei got sick after going to the pool and Kanako will go to his house and nurse him, although I didn’t expect him to be sick because of SNOW. Seriously, SNOW ?

When I look at this cat, he reminds me of Homer Simpson, lol. I guess its the tummy.

I think this episode was good in terms of character development. I normally get on my nerves when I see Kanako being all tsun-tsun, but its actually nice to see her dere-dere. Watching this episode makes you can’t help but feel pity for Kanako, how she likes Junpei but struggles to express herself. I just hope she’ll the courage to confess to Junpei soon though.

Twins in swimsuits

Although I think it’s admirable that the studio tries to bring every character in every episode, somehow it feels kinda out of place, like trying to fill in everything in one bag but there’s basically no more space. I think they twins were unnecessary during the first half. Chizuru segment also felt forced. Animation wise…well, they focus a lot of the boobs, so there’s a bit drop in the quality.

Next episode will be focusing on the twins it seems.

Well, what can I say ? I never really like filler episode, as distracts us from the main story. Still, I guess its forgivable for a romance comedy kind of show. Overall its still not a bad episode, though its getting less funny for me like the previous episodes. This week episode focus on a cat, Micchi, who wants to catch sparrows in order to impress the female cat, so he request Junpei to train him so he can…well, shape up. Unfortunately Micchi, Junpei was distracted as Mizuno request him to help her out with club activities, thus ignoring the cat’s request. Micchi sought revenge, so he took Mizuno’s bra and put it in Junpei’s bag, replacing Mizuno handkerchief that Junpei borrowed from her. When Junpei wanted to return the handkerchief, he took out Mizuno’s bra instead, causing a misunderstanding. Junpei found out later, asking why Micchi did that. Micchi explain that Junpei ignored him and because of him, that he won’t be able to impress the female cat.

Junpei felt guilty and apologize to Micchi and then trained him to become…well, a man, sorta. LOL at the intensive training, it was like training for the army. Of course lucky for Junpei the misunderstanding was cleared, thanks to his friend.

As for Micchi, well, let’s just say he got the pussy, heh.

For me, I’m just glad we have Nagi. Her idiocy really helps to make up for the boring parts of the story.

Like I said earlier, recently the studio have focusing more on fanserivce shots. Not that I’m complaining, just that I hope they won’t stroll away from the manga material that much. Also, the animation quality is getting real bad, though still bearable.

From next week preview, we will have a pool episode, which is from the manga, but they seem to add Kotone and Akari in. I won’t be surprise to see if they add Chizuru in, but I feel sometimes that they can be out of place. Also to note episodes are from the manga but different timeline, so I’m thinking they they might make Junpei fall sick during the pool trip, and Kanako comes to nurse him. We’ll see how it goes.

Well, what can I say ? It’s a typical high school Kyoto hot spring trip you’ll find in most romance high school animes. If you seen it once then you’ve seen them all. Nyan koi doesn’t do anything new for this one, well except Junpei still have to do some cat request DESPITE going for a school trip lol. Overall its still pretty much the same; have fun around sight seeing in Kyoto, dinner and hot spring bath formula.

Lucky near the end they actually went bump to Nagi’s house in Kyoto, but its nothing major and its near the end only.

Like I said before, I’m getting pretty annoyed with Kanako getting jealous over Junpei but doesn’t have the gal to say anything to him. This setup is pretty much common, and thinking back I pretty much prefer her as the mamba rather than the current Kanako.

As the series progress, the quality seems to be deteriorate, and focusing  more on cleavage shots and fanservice now. Hopefully it’s just for filler episodes, because Nyan Koi’s jokes should focus more on the cats, not fanservices. Next week also seems to be a filler episode as well.

So, after a long wait, we are finally introduce to the two twins. How do they fare up ? Well…not much of an impact to me actually. Akari is a pretty generic tsundere in my opinion, reminds me of the Kugimiya characters like Shana and Taiga. Kotone is a bit interesting with her fetish for ‘unfortunate guys’, but that’s pretty much about her. Oh, it seems that both of them have the ability to sense supernatural, thus explaining how Akari was able to see the curse on Junpei.

But overall, their characters are not what I expected. Guess its my fault for having high hopes on them.

Poor Junpei seems to have repeated his mistake during episode one. The funny part was, even the dog was shocked and ran away lol.

I honestly have no idea what sometimes the censorship department is thinking. You censor a panty shot ? On top of that making a mysterious shadow appear out of nowhere ? Guess this is the marketing startegy to get people buy more DVD’s.

Well, its only proper to have the cats back in action in this episode, after being gone for almost a full blown episode. Last week episode was all about developing Junpei and Mizuno relationship, so I’m glad we had some fun cat comedy. I’m really seeing Jun Fukuyama in a different light now. I’ve always thought he is only one style, but after hearing him in Nyan Koi and Sora o Kakeru Shōjo, I’m beginning to change my opinion.

As the series progresses, I’m beginning to dislike Kanako. Her character is becoming like a generic tsundere childhood friend. I don’t think we need 2 tsundere in the series, so either she changes back to her old self, or I’m going to facepalm everytime I see her.

Looks like from next episode preview and from what I was told, it will be a filler episode. It does seems that Nyan Koi also is going for the fanservice route, but let’s hope they don’t pour too much of it that it will ruin the show.

As for Junpei and Mizuno,they manage to show more character development for them. It’s nice to see that Mizuno is shown more like a normal girl ( being afraid of ghost ) here. It’s pretty sweet that both of them seem to be shy among each other now, since Mizuno is know that Junpei thinks her more than as a classmate.

Poor Kanako as she didn’t get much progress with Junpei. However, I began to dislike how they are making Kanako like a generic tsundere. She was more unique as the manba. I’m really like Nagi even more now in this episode, seeing how she supports Junpei and Mizuno’s love despite being rejected ( lol ). She’s truly a bro !

The eyecatch this week is drawn by Sato Fujiwara, the mangaka of Nyan Koi. I like the mangaka’s art, so it was a bonus for me.

We are introduce to the twins at the end of the episode, and only one of them. It seems that the twins ( or one of them ) has the same curse like Junpei. It’s even troublesome as Mizuno overheard about the curse. No cats for this week, except for Nyamsus and the black cat near the end of the episode.. Judging from next week episode, I guess we will get more cat action.

Episode summary :

The episode starts out showing off Mizuno’s abilities in the tracking team, and how Nagi really cares for her. While wiping the sweat of Mizuno’s face, Nagi remembers about seeing Mizuno’s sad face previously. This angers Nagi, who vows not to forgive Junpei for making Mizuno sad. As for Junpei, while preparing for class, he checks his desk and found a letter address to him. Thinking it might be from Mizuno, he nervously open the letter.

Challenge letter !

Unfortunately for him, the letter appears to be a challenge letter, asking him to be at Enoshima Beach at 6pm. Unfortunately for the challenger, our hero decide to tear the letter and flush it down the toilet, ignoring the challenge, whereas the challenger waited at the beach…for 3 days.

Which one is Junpei, can you guess ?

After the 3 day, Nagi stormed to Junpei class, demanding and explanation why he didn’t turn up for the challenge. Junpei explains that he throw away the letter, thus angering Nagi even more. While scolding Junpei, Nagi saw Kanako and praise how beautiful she is, and even going far touching her breast.

Wow, thats pretty bold.

…but Nagi suddenly faints.

Okay, this part really caught me off-guard, and was laughing hard here. I mean, it was so sudden that I didn’t expect it, and looking at Junpei and Nagi face reaction made it funnier for me. Ahem, anyway, turns out Nagi had a fever due to the fact Nagi waited at the beach for 3 days. Mizuno, who came looking for Nagi was shocked finding Nagi unconscious on the floor. After school, Kanako, Junpei and Mizuno carried Nagi, looking for Nagi’s house. To their surprise, Nagi is part of a yakuza family.

While Mizuno’s is enjoying this, Junpei and Mizuno on the other isn’t, and hoping to leave without anymore trouble. However, unfortunately for Junpei, Nagi’s grandfather invites them in for shelter from the rain, and a bath as well. As the grandfather leads the ladies to the bath, Junpei meets with Nagi’s cat, Josephine.

Okay, a male cat with a girls name. Where have I've seen this pattern before ?

Josephine then request Junpei to make Nagi fell in love again. Okay, that’s a pretty impossible request in my opinion.

As Nagi charges towards Junpei to attack, suddenly lightning strikes, and causing Nagi to hug Junpei out of fear. This shocks and surprises Junpei.

...WHAT ? A TRAP !?

As Junpei pushes Nagi back, his hand felt something soft on Nagi’s chest. Apparently Nagi is…A GIRL !??!?!?!??!

Yeah, I was pretty much shocked as Junpei when I found out Nagi is a girl. I mean, I was jokingly saying last week about TRAP, mainly because she’s voiced by Kobayashi Yuu but honestly I never expect her too be a TRAP. God she’s pretty cute when she does her girlish voice.

As Nagi looks for her eye patch, she explains that she’s actually scared of lighting due to seeing her grandfather strike by it so many times.

Strike by lighting while indoors ? WOW.

God, I wonder how did her grandfather survived the lighting so many times.

I really can't...

After finding her eye patch, she then demands Junpei to resume the duel.

Junpei wonders why is she so angry, and still thinks of her as a guy. This angers Nagi as it reminds her of how she was rejected by her first love because she was mistaken for a guy. Junpei also wonders why Nagi is interested in Mizuno whereas she’s a girl.

BEST.TRAP.EVER.

Nagi explains that she loves all kinds of beauty, even if its a girl. Wow, best trap ever !

Lightning sure comes at a convenient time.

When lightning strikes, hide in a mummy tomb.

Nagi then ask Junpei to resume their match, but once again lightning strike, thus Nagi runs and hides inside.

Awww, Junpei's sure is a nice guy.

OMG, the trap just become MOE. HNNNGGHH.

Thanks to the lightning however, Junpei manages to have a normal talk with Nagi, and even going far offering help to her if she needs it. Thanks to that, Nagi reverts to her girlish side, and also falls for Junpei.

Oh, did I mentioned that Nagi ends up staying in Junpei’s class, although she’s a senior ? Another girl added to the harem !

Thoughts :

Like I said earlier, this has got to be one of the most funniest episode of Nyan Koi so far. Nagi is a silly yet fun character who is definitely the star of this episode. Of course the fact that every joke was so sudden also help to contribute to the matter.

Saki !?

Yeah, the Saki characters are in Nyan Koi as cameo appearance. I wonder if the animation company is the same ? The animators seems to be focusing on Kanako’s boobs too much, making them larger and bouncier in every scene. Picture quality seems to be going down since episode 3, although it doesn’t really ruin the experience.

Next week the twins shows up, who is voiced by the goddess. I can’t wait to see how that will spice things up.

Well in this episode, we are introduce to Mochizuki Chizuru, a university student and also working as a part-time postwomen, who apparently loves…asses. Yeah, asses, don’t ask me why. I can’t really say that I enjoyed her character that much, I’m not sure why.  Lucky the multiple cats request that Junpei encounter filled that for me, otherwise it would be quite a bore for me during the first half.

The second half we shown a flashback on how Junpei and Mizuno first meet. It was quite hilarious for a first meeting, like Mizuno landing on Junpei when her tried to save her from falling from a tree and Mizuno slapping Junpei to wake him up. Overall it was a pretty satisfying episode, although the first half with Chizuru wasn’t.

Near the ending we are introduce Ichinose Nagi, who is voiced by the famous TRAP. From the preview of next week episode, we seem to have more fanservice than usual, so I hope it doesn’t become generic like a typical harem anime.

Episode summary

Junpei receive another wish from a cat, to retrieve a shoe that belongs to the cat’s owner that went over a house. The problem is there is a dog guarding the house. After much struggle, he manages to retrieve the shoe and run away. As he runs away, a girl with lots of makeup notice him. Near the shrine, Nyamsus and Tama reminds Junpei to not let anyone know about his curse, or else the person will also receive the curse. In addition, Junpei curse will progress even faster.

The school festival is nearing, so Junpei’s class decided to do a Maid cafe. As they are preparing, Junpei’s old friend Sumiyoshi Kanako, who is a manba, approach him to borrow a pair of scissors, but lend the scissors to Mizuno instead. This causes both of them to argue, and this has been happening since middle school. As they were arguing, Junpei notice Tama, who had came to the school.

Nyamsus tells Junpei that there’s a stray cat in the school who will be leaving, so the cat would like Junpei to thank the girl who has been feeding and caring for it. To Junpei’s surprise, the girl was Kanako. Kanako notice Junpei was talking to the cats. She then ask Junpei to be her servant for the day, if not threatens to tell everyone about him talking to the cats.

After bring Junpei around the school, Kanako tells him to wait for her while she repairs her makeup. As she was in the toilet doing her makeup, she suddenly remember about an incident in their childhood, where Kanako made a cat doll for Junpei, but next day Junpei gave it to another girl. She then remind herself that she’s not a weak and soft girl anymore, so later meet up with Junpei back. Junpei’s cold attitude however hurt Kanako and to his surprise, made her cry. She then wants to leave, but he stops her and unfortunately they got splash by water. Kanako makeup got ruined by the water, which angers her, so she chased him.

As both of them were tired from running, Junpei notice how Kanako is still a gentle girl although she makes up as a manba. The Junpei suddenly remembers about their childhood incident, and fear that Kanako might take it the wrong way. Mizuno finds them, and brings Kanako to change her clothes since she’s is still wet. To their surprise, Mizuno changes Kanako to a maid. Later after the school festival, she looks for the stray cat, but unable to find it. Junpei then tells her that the cat left, and that the cat is thankful for what she has done for it. Junpei also explains about the childhood incident that he only showed the doll to the girl, and still have the doll. This cheers Kanako up, and the next day she comes to school without makeup.

Wow, a manba girl ! This is something new which I never seen before. I do recall seeing thickly makeup, characters once in a while, but not a manba girl. This is certainly unique and different from the normal ones.

Well, I’m for one glad that I decided to check out this anime, because I’m really having a good time with it. Its light hearted comedy about cats charm really works well.

I’m beginning to accept and like Junpei’s seiyuu, as he sounds more into his character than episode one. The best moment was definitely when he was ‘calculating the formula’ who was the girl who feed the cat. Turns out his secret is still safe, as Nanako doesn’t know that he can’t speak to cats.

Seems that this anime has a lot of well known seiyuus, like I never guess a certain butler would voice Kanako. She sounds so different and feminine compared to her previous role, so I’m enjoying her character a lot. One thing I’m glad is that she’s not the generic Shana / Louise tsundere. It quite obvious that Kanako has feelings for Junpei, so it would be interesting how it would play out since she’s also Mizuno’s friend.

Thank god she drop the make up.

Yeah, I’m glad she drop the makeup, seeing her like this is definitely more pleasing to the eye. Seeing her in maid outfit is a bonus as well.

Oh, Mizuno being clueless to almost about everything never fails to amuse me. Sadly we get less of her this week as the focus is more to Kanako, but its not a bad thing since Kanako is a likable character as well.

With this episode, I have decided that I will definitely be following this anime.
